So the question I'm sure that has been on your mind is what will you earn as a plasterer?

 Well this is something that of course will go up over time with inflation, but at present you will earn between £180 - £250 a day. ( Yes, sometimes you can earn £300 a day working in wealthy areas in London and elsewhere.) but I want to give you normal standard earnings at present.

So if you were working full time earning £180.00 a day doing a five day week, and taking 6 weeks off you would earn £37,800 a year.

If you were working full time earning £250 a day doing a five day week, and taking 6 weeks off you would earn £52,500 a year.

Now should you give a fixed quotation to your customer or work on a day rate? Well both are fine, and I know what your thinking, a day rate right? Well I've always gone for a fixed quotation and added more to the quote if the client asks for extra work from me. There are three main reasons I do this.

Firstly the client is much more relaxed and they leave you to do the job. They don't keep popping their head in to see what your up to.

Secondly people generally don't understand your trade, they might think your taking longer than you should to finish the job, and they're having to pay for the extra time. So a fixed quote builds both trust and a great reputation. And over time you get recommended to new clients and also get repeat work.

And thirdly, and most importantly it puts you in charge of your rhythm for the day, the week and the month. I like to have a calm morning and show up at 10.30am missing the morning rush, with a coffee in my hand and put the music on I like. I can always choose to leave early that day or take a longer lunch if I want to. Theres a HUGE freedom in that. 

I can do two jobs back to back and take a week off, or do one job and take a break for a few days and do something completely different altogether. It's up to me, I'm my own boss, and you can be too.

I always felt deep down I was never suited to doing a 9-5 office job

 Showing up at the same time in the same place five days a week. When I think back to 2004 in truth I was a little lost back then. I went from different jobs not quite fitting in whether it was working for a company or just working behind a bar.

The common misconception about standard plastering

 Its an art!

Well actually its not an art, it's a formula, a strategy, and when you understand that formula and  strategy everything makes much more sense.

Baking a cake is a formula, a strategy. Mix all the ingredients in at the wrong time and in the wrong order however. Leave it in the oven the wrong length of time you get a bad cake.

Absolutely there's a skill to be learnt in plastering and bonding. You can't learn it in a weekend, a week, or in its entirety in one month, and anyone claiming you can is not being honest with you.
